How did you first start 3D modeling? Did you have a big goal, in those days?
I had first entered this world with Amiga 1200 and Imagine 3D software. I was very impressed when I realized what 3D offered. I continued working on it as a hobby for long years and improved my skills in modeling. I worked freelance when I was at university, then in 2003, I started my professional career in United Kingdom. One year later, I was offered a job from WetaDigital and worked for King Kong movie.
Which parts of 3D visualisation are you specialized in?
I’m working on modeling and texture mostly.
It is observed that you are impressed by dream world in your own character work. We know from your another interview with 3D Station that you are interested in fantastic novels and your favourite is the Lord of the Rings. How do you find the reflection of this magical novel on the white screen?
I believe that in terms of art directing and technical effects the movie was made in the best way it could ever be, I wasn't disappointed when I saw it on the screen after reading the books, on the contrary while watching I enjoyed the visuality and the engrossing way of it and I found it very well-made.
Peter Jackson was sitting on the director chair of the well-known movie series Lord of the Rings. After a while this brave man came up with the cinema history’s 6th most expensive movie and recreated King Kong. You had the opportunity to take a part in it as well. Have you had the chance to meet with him? Did he deal with the visual work personally?
As you can imagine, Weta is a huge company, even the digital department that we have worked in includes 500 people. He attended some of the meetings. I haven’t had a conversation with him face to face about the job but we had the chance to meet him at the gorgeous party for the "Kong Crew" at the set of New York City. He also always contributed with his comments to the visualisation work.
Could you please tell us about the crew that worked on modelling this huge 8 man tall creature? What was your mission at this work specifically? On what part of the King Kong model that you have worked on?
In the process of modelling Kong, a single person has worked, a few people including me has helped a little. I worked on detailing the foot area.
How does it feel to be a part of such a popular organization?
It is really an exciting feeling to see your own work on the white screen. It is also very honoring to know that this work will be permanent and also is going to be seen all around the world, and as a Turkish person!
Movies are huge organizations and require harmonic gathernesses. How does it happen to make hundreds of people working in visualisation field work in harmony? Have you ever confronted any problems in the process of the project?
Where you work is a place that hundreds of people works to show themselves. There are definitely some quarrels and competing. On the other hand, there are production coordinaters who deals with the crew’s deadlines, meeting hours, revisions and notes. I mean all the necessary conditions for you to work productive were considered and mission dispersion was already made. Therefore, missions were seperated into departments and all the departments were working on dependent on each other.
Which movie impressed you most with its visual effects and what is the name of the director that you find closer to yourself in terms of visual comprehension?
The last movie of the Star Wars; Revenge of the Sith is one of the movies that I like most lately. As directors, Steven Spielberg and David Fincher are my favorites.
We frequently read the stories of success of the worldwide known artists and movie makers. They can reach the summit with eyecatching rises in their careers after major falls. It’s not possible not to adore the success that a director candidate; George Lucas who recevied reaction from producing company with THX1138 film and lost his confidence, had with Star Wars series. Do you have an artist or a success story that impresses you like this?
For me, there’s noone special but I can't help myself respecting people that have done the things they have done even though they had nothing at all in the beginning. I believe that in these stories, as much as the success, itself, social environment, luck and even the social and financial situation of your country have an effect.
Are you planning to continue your career being part of film industry or would you prefer to exist in advertising industry or in personal works?
Film industry and computer games are the fields that make me excited, moreover, these are the areas that I would prefer to improve my portfolio and myself thinking of the projects, the quantity and the splendour of it.
Just imagine that you have an unlimited budget, and the necessary influence and contacts to work with any actor or director you could want. What kind of a movie would you produce? ( or would you ditch the film idea and make another dreams of yours come true? )
I would like to shoot a pre-sequel movie to Matrix.
Do you care for fame? Who would you choose if you had a chance to substitute for a famous person?
Not exactly fame but I would rather care for being the best in whatever I do and I do my best for it no matter how hard I have to work as long as I have enough time. Surely, I believe that this would bring fame with itself. From that point, I would like to substitute for George Lucas for a day and supervise the works in production.
We set the subject of the first issue of Bak Magazine as "Wrong". What does this word signifies you? Can you mention about the wrongs in your country, in the world,in your life, environment and work?
The concept of "mistake" is highly relative; and changes for each individual. This concept that contradicts with our personal rights and gains can ring true for others. Thus, nowadays, I am extremely tolerant to myself and others; and I can't think of a "mistake" that I truly despise. Particularly, if you missed your homeland for one and a half years, some of these "mistakes" even seem sweet.
Thank you for the questions. I had the chance to think over while answering. Wish you the best in your works.
