Can you tell us about your working habits and workspace? What would we see on the table of Thomas Schostok and what kind of music would we hear if we visit him while working?
I usually stand up at 8am in the morning, went swimming for half an hour. Then I head directly to my studio for the first coffee and a quick breakfast... The rest of the day happens on pure accident.
I usually working on a Apple Mac. On my table are piles of paper, some digital gadgets I even don’t know their function and a book from David Carson to remind me to avoid the mainstream during designing stuff.
'Aloha from Hawaii - The Alternate Concert' from Elvis Presley is constantly playing over the day since two weeks now.
When you take the technological developments into consideration, how do you evaluate the future of graphic design and illustration?
What's really happened to the technological developments in design if you disregard the internet (that's old news anyway)? Sure, Photoshop has more features now that can make any retard with a pirate copy into a 'designer', but design and illustration is still where it was 10 years ago. Nothing’s really changed. Sure, graphic design is being applied more in various mediums such as shop interiors/windows, vinyl toys and so forth, but there's nothing really new within the actual designs. At least not as a reaction to any new technological advances...
Today, we are communicating with e-mails, not writing letters or sending cards anymore. Surely, these technological developments will continue with an increasing speed. However, this situation is not completely positive. We are losing some values. What do you think about this? What shouldn't change even if everything does, in your opinion?
I think the future of communication will be video chatting (even if we already have it). I’m not sure if we really lost some values. I mean, a hand written letter of your lover can’t be substituted with email or video chatting. I saw people who weren’t able to write words on paper, or had problems with their handwriting because of the fact, that they simply don’t write on paper anymore, just emailing. That’s terrible. I love things, that are written by hand. I can only hope that those things will be preserved in the future by people.
As the owner of the old and wonderful Beast Magazine, what do you think about e-zines? Can they be the future of publishing?
Maybe the future is now? I see a new trend coming. For example, printing on demand is be something that we might see in the future. Printing books and magazines is very cheap right now, due new printing services over the internet. I’m always a friend of printed stuff, somewhat you can hold in your hands. E-zines can’t offer you that pleasure.
You say you work very hard and you don't have time to go on publishing the inspirational Beast Magazine. This is a good example which proves that boring corporate works are limiting our imagination and freedom. Do you think working as a freelancer or founding an agency can be a solution?
No, absolutely not. If you found an agency or a design studio (like myself) you don’t have normal life. You can’t simply go home and have your private life. The situation is, I always think about jobs and projects. I don’t stop working just because I’m at home. When I worked as a freelance I had much more time to do 'private' projects.
Do you like traveling? Which countries and cities do you want to visit most?
I don’t like traveling. Traveling makes me hungry and tired. I like to work.
Are you interested in cinema? Which directors do you find closer to yourself?
Quentin Tarantino could be my man.
Theme of our 5th issue is "Game". Do you remember what kind of games had you played in your childhood?
Taxi Driver and Building worker, ohh, and playing 'doctor games' with the girl next door.
Imagine that life is a computer game and it has cheats. What cheats would you use? Would you want to be immortal?
To be immortal is boring. No, I like to go through walls!
What is your greatest aim in your life?
My goal is to find a girlfriend who isn’t afraid of taking 6 meals a day!
