As a 19 year old designer, while having a great talent in graphic design, you also study web programming and you look pretty good at it, too. What's your greatest aim for the future? Where do you see yourself when you become 30?
The greatest aim for the future would be to be able to work with creative and talented people in various co-operative design and art projects, freelance or on a design studio. By the time I am 30, I see myself working with creative and talented people on an award winning company.”
How can you define your country, Sweden? How is art, people relations, the government, streets, galleries etc.?
Sweden is a modern and friendly country in every aspect; the government is probably the best in the world; we help each other in Sweden. We do the best we can to make life it easier to live. We are reserved people but we encourage art, music, movies, culture and life, everything that makes life worth living.
In your beautiful illustration "Wanna Go?", we see the Pissa, Eiffel, Collesium and The Statue of Liberty together. Have you ever thought about leaving your country? Do you "Wanna Go" to another place? Where do you see yourself ten years later?
There are many places in the world that I want to visit, too much to see in one lifetime. I want to work in the United States. Live the NYC life. In ten years I will probably live and work in the US.
In the logo of Kalmar University which you are studying web programming at, we see a key. Which doors do you think this key opens? Do you think communication and design education is sufficient in your country? And what are your comments on the statement "Art cannot be taught"?
I believe that my education can help me to a better understanding on how web development works, at the beginning I was only a designer, I thought about “making things look pretty”. As a developer, I think about backend problems and solutions. With both these, I can make great looking sites with the functionality and accessibility that every site should have. I got both qualities. This will also help me in larger projects in every aspect. Deadlines, amount of hours, problems & solutions.
We have a lot of communication and design education in Sweden; we have Hyper Island (www.hyperisland.se), one of the world’s best digital media schools.
“Art cannot be taught”. I feel technique and theory can absolutely be taught, although, no one can learn how to be creative. Inspiration and the will to commit time to create art are unteachable. That is something you will have to find on your own.
If you wake up tomorrow with limitless money in your bank account, what would you do first?
I would transfer money to my relatives in the Philippines.
In which period of time and with which artists would you like to share your dining table if you have one chance? Can you tell some names who impressed you in the art history?
Present time, I would like to share my dining table with James Widegren (idiocase.com) and Jens Karlsson (chapter3.net). In history, Andy Warhol is probably the only one that got my attention. However, I’m more fascinated and impressed by modern digital artists such as the crew at depthcore.com and the KDU.
Does music change your mood while creating? What kinds of music do you prefer and which artists or bands do you listen mostly?
Music is a big part of my creative process. Couldn’t live without it. I listen to everything, mostly Indie/Rock/Blues music. I listen to bands like Silverchair, Nirvana, Blindside, The Hives, and The White Stripes.
Are you interested in movies? If yes, how do you compare the European Cinema and Hollywood style? Which movie did you watch lately and what do you think about it?
Yes. European Cinema has a more serious and artistic approach to movies rather than Hollywood’s “big and expensive” motion pictures. European Cinema feels more real and they make movies about real situations. I love both types, could not live without them. I watched “Finding Neverland” with Johnny Depp. It was a great movie, artistic and serious. And the tagline is unlock your imagination, simply amazing.
As the capitalism grows day by day, brand addiction started to be a disease for people. Do you have favorite brands that make you feel better or more powerful?
I have a couple of brands that I feel very strong about, I love Coca-Cola, Pepsi will not do. It’s either Coke or Water. I am also thinking of buying a mp3-player. In addition, the only brand I can see myself having is an Apple iPod, other brands just won’t do. I also love vegan shoes, only Macbeth though.
